One of the most common questions I have is about the cost of living on Guam. Having been here for almost 8 years already, I really don’t have a clue what basic necessities cost back in the U.S. anymore.
I know a lot of people are considering moving here to take part in some aspect of the big military buildup and are curious how far their money will go. Other posts have talked about the high cost of rent, which I don’t think can really go any higher at this point.
For grocery shopping on Guam, you basically have two options. Payless Supermarket, or, if you have base privileges, the Navy or Air Force Commissary.
So here is a price comparison of just a few of the basic products that I buy every week or two. It should give you some idea, and you can compare them to what you pay for the same products in the mainland. For military retirees or anyone considering moving here that has access to the Navy or Air Force Commissaries, you can see when it comes to saving money, shopping on base is the only way to go.
(The price tag is $5.49)
